What is low AMH level?

AMH is anti-mullerian hormone. It plays its role for both genders. It also has roles to play in ovulation, embryogenesis, and the functions of sex hormones. The doctor recommends a blood test to find out the levels of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH). But, what does AMH blood test tell? It tells about a woman’s remaining egg supply, also called ‘the egg reserve’.

You may be wondering if it also tells about the quality of eggs. To clear your doubt, it does not tell the quality of the eggs, for the quality of eggs can be known by testing a woman’s eggs in a laboratory. The quality of eggs depends on a woman’s age and other health issues. Eggs need to be taken out for examination in a laboratory in order to evaluate their quality.

It is said that the AMH level declines in women as they grow old. But in some women it can also go down too soon. If the AMH level goes down too soon, premature menopause also can also occur.

One thing we need to understand is testing AMH levels does not give any information about the quality of eggs. It gives information about the ‘egg reserve’ of the woman. 

If a woman’s AMH level is low, it shows that she does not have a big egg reserve. That is why, if she has plans to give birth to a baby, she had better not postpone her plans for pregnancy. Because low AMH level also indicates that her menopause may be near. After menopause, women do not produce eggs and therefore cannot become pregnant naturally.

Low AMH for fertility

It is important to keep in mind that a woman’s chances of getting pregnant are not determined by her AMH level. Even with low AMH level, a woman can successfully become pregnant. A woman’s chances of pregnancy depend on several things, such as the health of her reproductive system, ovulation, hormones, the quality of her eggs, and the sperm of her male partner.

So, you need not think you cannot conceive if your AMH level is low. A woman can still become pregnant with a low AMH, with a low egg reserve. Because eggs are still present in the ovaries. With AMH test, a doctor can find out if a woman may experience premature menopause because a period of reduced ovarian reserve can cause premature menopause.

Low AMH causes and symptoms

First, we will talk about symptoms. Low AMH level does not have any symptoms. It is natural for a woman to experience low levels of AMH as she ages. And a time comes when she experiences menopause.   • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In PCOS, the ovaries secrete a large amount of androgen. This hormonal imbalance and multiple small cysts in the ovaries can impact AMH levels.
