WHAT IS VAMANA?

Vamana therapy is a part of panchakarma therapy. It is a controlled emesis in which the vomiting is induced which runs for a fixed duration and then is stopped. 

“दोषहरणं ऊर्ध्वभागं वमनाख्यं……” (ashtang sangraha)
the process of expelling doshas through mouth is called vamana. It is a part of sanshodhan karma. Vaman is the treatment of choice for extracting kapha dosha.


SUITABLE PATIENTS FOR VAMANA AYURVEDIC TREATMENT
Vamana is practiced in patients with kapha dosha, pitta samrisht kapha. It is commonly practiced in kushtha, shwasa, unmada, arochak, raktapitta, visuchika, prameh, kaas, visarpa etc, in vasanta ritu, purvakarma of rasayana.

CONTRAINDICATED PERSON FOR VAMANA AYURVEDIC TREATMENT
Vamana is contraindicated in 
pregnancy, people of soft nature, very strong digestive system, people engaged in lifting heavy weights, obesity, excess weak person, old age, children, during fasting, thirsty person, patients without going through asthapan basti, patients who has not undergone snehan swedana, depressed people, intestinal parasites, tumor in abdomen, heart disease and etc.

Vamana panchakarma therapy drugs is of many types-
1.  on reaching the stomach it stimulates the vagus nerve endings to initiate vamana. Such drugs are called gastric emesis dravya.
2.  Some drugs are first absorbed by the body and then causes vamana. Example digitalis, opium etc.

Madanphala (Randia demetorum)
Jeemutak (Luffa echinata)
Ikshavaku (Lagenaria siceraria)
Sarson (Brassica campestris) etc


PROCEDURE FOR ADMINISTRATION OF VAMAK DRAVYA

A must go through snehana and swedana before taking vamana panchakarma therapy. Patient is administered kapha enhancing food and a good sleep before the day of vamana. On the particular day the patient is made to sit on a soft seated bench of height upto the knees. Vamana dravya such as chitrakadi vati, trikatu churna is then consumed by the patient. The patient’s umbilical region and back is massaged in upward direction.

The vomit is carefully observed by the physician which helps in determining the further line of action.

Vamana therapy is said to be best when there is eight episodes of emesis. Minimum should be 4 and 6 episodes is moderate. Vamana should be continues till there is greenish yellow and sticky appearance at the end. This indicates that complete expulsion of kapha dosha .

If the patient perspires, it indicates the melting of doshas.
Then the patient will have goose bumps indicating that doshas have started moving from its location.
Third stage includes distension of the abdomen which indicates that doshas have relocated in the intestine.
Nausea and salivation is the fourth stage indicating movement of doshas in upward direction.

If the vamana therapy is not induced properly there may be itching, rashes, fever, foam or blood in the vomit etc.

Signs of proper administration of vamana therapy-

Vomiting urges on time
Absence of too much pain
Elimination of doshas in the order of  kapha pitta and vata
Relieves stress and calms the mind.
Feeling of not too much of discomfort.

MANAGEMENT AFTER EMESIS 
After proper vamana therapy the hands, feet and face of the patient should be washed with warm water, consoled and then nasya therapy is given. Later patient is kept in a closed room.
