Ayurvedic treatment of Hydrosalpinx (blocked fallopian tube)

Hydrosalpinx

Hydrosalpinx is a condition related to the fallopian tubes. First, understand fallopian tubes and their role in pregnancy. Conception takes place in a woman when the woman’s egg is penetrated by a male’s sperm. Different parts of a woman’s reproductive system, such as the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries, are involved in the process of conception and the growth of the child.

The function of the ovaries is to produce eggs. The fallopian tubes catch eggs from the ovaries and transport them to the uterus. If the egg is not fertilized, it is shed with the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus) during menstruation. But if the egg is fertilized, the periods stop, and the egg gradually grows in the uterus also called the womb.

Fertilization of the egg usually takes place in the fallopian tube. But a fallopian tube can also become blocked due to fluid in it or some other reasons. A fallopian tube filled with fluid is diagnosed as hydrosalpinx.

Because of the blockage, the egg cannot reach the uterus nor can sperm penetrate the egg in the tube. And therefore, the chances of pregnancies are lost. However, if the other tube is open, pregnancy can take place through it. But infertility can occur in the cases in which both fallopian tubes are blocked.

However, hydrosalpinx in one tube can also cause troubles in pregnancies. If left untreated, it could get worse in the course of time. Therefore, one must visit the doctor for its cure and for having a safe pregnancy.

Hydrosalpinx causes

It could be caused by an old infection in the fallopian tube. Hydrosalpinx or tubal blockage causes may involve:

  • Previous surgery
  • Sexually transmitted infection
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Severe adhesions of the pelvis

Hydrosalpinx symptoms

Many women do not experience any symptom other than infertility issues. An ectopic pregnancy could also be a sign of a problem with the fallopian tube. Some women may experience a regular, constant pain in their lower belly or pelvis. This pain becomes worse during the periods. A vaginal discharge could also be one of the hints.

Diagnosing Hydrosalpinx

There are different ways to detect if one or both fallopian tubes are blocked due to hydrosalpinx or another reason.

  • Ultrasound. The doctor may find out the presence of hydrosalpinx on ultrasound. If a fallopian tube is shown enlarged on ultrasound, it may be indicative of a severe hydrosalpinx.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). A special liquid is injected into the uterus by the doctor through the patient’s cervix (neck of the womb) and an x-ray (called Hysterosalpingogram or HSG) is taken to see the flow of the liquid. If a fallopian tube is blocked, the flow of liquid will stop at that location. If the liquid flows out of the ends of the fallopian tubes and falls into the pelvic cavity, it means the tubes are open.

Although, this test may sometimes give false results suggesting that a fallopian tube is blocked or sometimes results are hard to interpret.

  • Laparoscopy (surgery). In this test, the doctor looks at the uterus and the fallopian tubes with the help of a lighted camera. The surgeon inserts a fiber-optic instrument (laparoscope) through the abdominal wall in order to see the uterus and the fallopian tubes and can also perform a small-scale surgery. So, the surgeon performs laparoscopy with the help of several devices including a camera.
