DIGESTION AND CHILD’S IMMUNITY

According to the ayurvedic texts the well being of the body depends upon how healthy the agni is. Jathragni is the main agniresponsible for breakdown of the food and converting it into nutrient fluid. A healthy and strong jathragniproduces proper chyle that makes the cells healthy and nourishes the tissue. The dhatusi.e the tissues are formed from the nutrient fluids. Any hindrance in the process of digestion can lead to a weak dhatu (tissues).

The following is the sequence of formation of the dhatus.

RASA (plasma, nutrient fluid)- RAKTA (blood cells)- MAMSA (muscles)-MEDA (fatty tissues)- ASTHI (bones)- MAJJA (bone marrow and central nervous system)- SHUKRA (reproductive tissues)

From the above we can imagine how important is the role of digestion in children. As childhood is the phase when the growth is fast and development of organs, bones and tissues takes place. Feeding child with a healthy food accompanied with smooth functioning of jathragni produces a healthy nutrient fluid, which is very essential for the formation of a child’s all the seven dhatus.

A weak digestive system leads to formation of toxins. These toxins block the body channels carrying the nutrients to the cells that result in blocking the nutrition to the dhatusresulting in certain diseases, fatigue, lethargy etc.

The presence of toxins in the body gives favourable environment for growth of certain bacteria that makes a body vulnerable to diseases as the immunity of a child is compromised. Thus we now know how a weak digestive system can affect your child’s immunity. The end product of digestion is calledojas and the health of a child or the immunity of a child is directly proportional to the production of ojas. Ojas is helpful in preventing the disease and maintaining the balance of health of an individual.

The immunity in a child must be developed with a proper diet and a proper health care. This keeps the doshas balanced and maintains a proper digestion. The strong immunity of a child keeps them active, vibrant and happy and also keeps the disease at bay.
